Job Title: Forestry & Environmental Coordinator
Reports To: Executive Director
Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Forestry & Environmental Coordinator will be responsible for building relationships with the forest industry, Crown and Environmental agencies, while supporting cultural and environmental preservation through community engagement and documentation, and ensuring First Nation values are represented in forestry and environmental management of Matachewan First Nation (MFN) traditional lands.
Term: Full-Time, Permanent
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday 8:30AM – 4:30PM
Location: Matachewan First Nation and surrounding areas
Compensation: $60,000 - $80,000 annually
Benefits: Employer-paid benefits package and enrollment in pension plan
Start Date: As soon as possible
Areas of Responsibility
- Develop, build, consult and maintain relationships with the forest and environmental industries and Crown agencies.
- Increase community participation in cultural preservation and documentation (host workshops, information sessions, send out flyers to all MFN band members) to increase knowledge and awareness.
- Participate in all forestry and environmental resource management and development consultation sessions.
- Sit on and participate in forestry boards and committees to ensure the community has a voice.
- Participate in forestry and environmental related trainings and conferences.
- Plan and monitor forestry activities while considering environmental consequences.
- Assist in archeology site visits for all resource extraction sites on MFN traditional lands (such as but not limited to MTO, OPG, Hydro, Forestry, Aggregates, transition and pipelines).
- Support wildfire safety and forest protection.
- Assist with land use mapping and environmental checks.
- Collect and manage First Nation values and work with traditional knowledge.
- Sample soil and water in local areas and lakes.
- Prepare samples for testing onsite as well as offsite.
- Shadow the L&R Coordinator with forestry outings/meetings and learn how MFN's forestry agreements are reached.
- Assist the L&R Coordinator with our community Fish Hatchery (train how the equipment works and how to gather data and input into the data system).
- Prepare interim and final reports for Wabun.
- Assist in site visits as well as with creating policies related to lands.
- Other related duties as requested by the Executive Director.
Requirements
- College diploma or university degree in forestry and/or environmental field is preferred.
- Mapping knowledge is considered an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
- Able to work methodically and accurately, with attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Comfortable working outdoors in any weather conditions.
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License.
- Acceptable recent Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check.
