PositionSummary
The Communications Officer is responsible for planning, developing, and delivering clear, respectful, and culturally appropriate communication for the Nation/Organization. This position supports strong community connection through newsletters, social media, public notices, media releases, events promotion, and internal communications.
The Communications Officer ensures information is shared in a timely way while protecting privacy, honoring community protocols, and uplifting Indigenous identity, language, and community strengths.
Key Responsibilities
Community Communications
- Prepare and share community notices, updates, and announcements (programs, services, events, emergencies).
- Support communication between leadership, departments, staff, and community members.
- Develop newsletters, posters, flyers, and other community information materials.
- Ensure messaging is accurate, respectful, and aligned with community values and leadership direction.
Social Media & Digital Communications
- Manage and update official social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
- Create weekly/monthly communication schedules and content plans.
- Respond to public inquiries online in a professional manner.
- Promote positive stories, achievements, cultural events, and community wellness messages.
- Monitor and address misinformation in coordination with leadership.
Media Relations & Public Information
- Draft media releases and public statements as directed.
- Coordinate interviews and media requests following established protocols.
- Support crisis communication (weather emergencies, service disruptions, etc.).
- Ensure public communications represent the Nation respectfully and professionally.
Branding & Visual Identity
- Maintain consistent use of logos, colors, and approved messaging.
- Support the creation of culturally appropriate designs (posters, banners, signage).
- Assist with photography and videography for events and programs (with consent).
- Keep a digital photo and media archive organized and secure.
Event Support & Community Engagement
- Promote community events, meetings, gatherings, and workshops.
- Support event planning communication (invitations, agendas, posters).
- Assist with outreach and engagement efforts (surveys, community feedback, public info sessions).
Administrative & Reporting
- Maintain communication records and copies of publications.
- Prepare monthly activity reports (social media stats, communication outputs).
- Support funding-related reporting requirements for communications deliverables.
- Follow confidentiality and privacy requirements in all communications.
Cultural Values & Protocol
The Communications Officer must:
- Follow community cultural protocols and guidance from Elders and leadership.
- Respect the sacredness of ceremonies and cultural teachings.
- Ensure permission/consent is received before sharing names, photos, or sensitive information.
- Promote truth, respect, inclusion, and community well-being through communications.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Diploma or certificate in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media, Marketing, Indigenous Studies, or related field; OR equivalent experience.
- Minimum 2 years experience in communications, administration, or community engagement preferred.
- Experience working with First Nations, Inuit, or Métis communities is a strong asset.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Knowledge of Indigenous community values and respectful communication.
- Ability to create content for social media and newsletters.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to manage sensitive information with confidentiality.
- Experience using Microsoft Office and online communication tools.
Technical Skills (Assets)
- Canva, Adobe, or design tools.
- Photography/videography and basic editing.
- Website updating (WordPress or similar).
Working Conditions
- Some evening/weekend work may be required for events and meetings.
- Travel may be required within the community or region.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment during urgent announcements.
Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License (Class G) and reliable transportation (preferred/asset).
- Vulnerable Sector Check / Criminal Record Check (as required).
- Must follow workplace policies including confidentiality, respectful workplace, and social media guidelines.
