Chemical Laboratory Technician

Position:             Chemical Laboratory Technician

Reports to:         Laboratory Manager

Responsibility: Performs laboratory testing activities assigned by the Laboratory Manager

Duties:

·         Performs assigned tasks in accordance with standard operating procedures or methods. Tasks include: sample weighing; sample digestion; preparation of standard solutions; use of flame atomic absorption, micro-wave plasma and inductively coupled plasma spectrometers; gravimetric determinations; sample preparation and assay furnace operations.

·         Enters and reviews data from instruments and the laboratory information management soft ware (LIMS) during the course of analysis and reports any discrepancies or problems to the Laboratory Manager.

·         Performs any other duties related to the position of technician as directed by the Laboratory Manager or designate when schedule and workload permit.

·         Clean-up of the assigned workspaces at the end of each shift.

·         As part of our employee cross-training program, the technician may be re-assigned to other laboratory activities on a temporary or permanent basis.

·         Inspects the condition of equipment and instruments during the shift.

 

Work Conditions:

 

·         Work weeks are 5 days, Monday to Friday, 8.5 hours per day. Hours of work are arranged beforehand with the Laboratory Manager. Starting hours vary with the shift assigned.

·         Employees are entitled to two (2) fifteen-minute paid rest breaks and one (1) thirty-minute unpaid lunch break each day. Breaks are scheduled by the Laboratory Manager. No food or drink is to be stored and consumed in any of the laboratory work areas.

·         Employees must follow all safety procedures in the laboratory. Safety equipment must be worn at all times in the laboratory where required I.E. safety glasses, face shields, rubber gloves and aprons. No open-toed shoes are permitted. Employees are to report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the Laboratory Manager or Safety Committee representative.

·         Employees may be required to work overtime and on weekends during busy periods.

·         Annual review of employee performance and remuneration by the Laboratory Manager.

 

Employment Requirements:

 

·         Completion of a college diploma as a certified chemical or chemical engineering technician from a recognized institution meeting Canadian education standards and a minimum of three (3) years of laboratory experience in the mining industry. A university degree in a science field is an asset.

·         Proficient in spoken and written English. French is an asset.

·         Punctual, meticulous and reliable

·         Good mathematic and computer skills

·         A criminal record check by the police and a valid WHMIS certificate

·         Courteous and respectful to fellow employees, customers and the public.

·         Legal status to work in Ontario.
